Before & After: The Hallway
If you thought there was a limit to how much pink paint I could put into one apartment… well, the hallway is going to push it just that little bit further. We painted the hallway white back in April, one of the last spaces we finished while we were updating the apartment, and was a great facelift and freshen up — but over the last few months I started thinking there was room for a bit more colour. A few weeks ago I ordered a bench for the entrance, and seeing it in the space was the last thing I needed to push me into painting a bright colour to contrast with the velvet bench.
When we moved in, the hallway was a combination of plaid wallpaper and blue-grey painted-over wallpaper. Renovating during a pandemic has been a challenge, so we didn’t remove the wallpaper, just painted white on top — definitely not the ideal solution, but totally fine for where we’re at now.
Adding some more artwork on to the walls (a vintage travel poster and a very cute mermaid from Ib Antoni and the work for Copenhagen Tourism) and I used as the motivator for picking a colour that could tie all the colours of the apartment together. I picked out a rich rose pink and we got to work. The first coat definitely gave me pause as to whether or not we had gone too far, but after the second coat, and putting all the artwork back on the walls, we love it! We also updated the electrical outlets to be the same consistent black plugs - the same as the light switches and the outlets in the other rooms, and along with giving a nice feeling of consistency through the apartment, it also adds a more graphic style that offsets the pink walls. The pink update feels deluxe and romantic and fun, and ties the other rooms together in such a great way.
I sometimes wonder what the former owners would think if they came back for a visit… we’re definitely a different set of tastes! We’ve just ticked into 6 months of living in this apartment and it’s been the most fun project putting our new home together. We both love living here, and having the freedom to decorate how we like has been a great experience (although I think we both will be glad to retire the paintbrushes for a while now!).
