Marble Dreams
I accidentally clicked into the Facebook Marketplace tab on my phone on Saturday afternoon. Like, actually accidental. However, at the top of the page for items in Malmö was a ‘soffbord i marmor’ and my eye was immediately caught by the salmon-pink colour running through the marble. And it was 800kr (roughly $125AUD). The listing had been up for several days so I thought my chances of it still being available would be low (why would a vintage PINK marble table still be available after 4 days online?). I fired off a message to ask if it was still available… and less than an hour later we were hiring a car to go and collect it.
The listing described the marble slab as being heavy and needing two people… we naively thought “how heavy can it really be?” and figured we’d be fine - we’re two people after all! As soon as we arrived to pick it up I knew we’d made a huge judgement error, but what could we do at that stage? Queue 20 minutes of us struggling and sweating through a busy pedestrian street in Malmö to the hire car parked in a side street, before leaving Joshua there balancing the marble slab so I could go back to the sellers apartment to pick up and carry the table base on my own to the car.
The short drive back to our apartment was full of me saying “I’m so sorry, we’ll never do this again, I promise” and Joshua saying “It’s ok… and I don’t believe you”. Ha! A similar struggle on the other end back to our apartment, the last push being us sliding the marble slab through the front door using our door mat to help it inch along. Finally, we got it into place in the living room and all was (almost) forgiven; it’s the perfect piece and is such a dreamy pairing with the green walls of the living room. Our bodies have been in total agony this week after the efforts of getting the table moved - but I’m employing some selective amnesia for what it took to get it here and relishing in the bargain and perfect new home for this piece!
