Our first Christmas in Malmo
Our first Christmas in Sweden! We had originally planned to skip the Christmas decorations, knowing our time in our short-term rental was up in January/February, and not wanting to add too many possessions to our second move in 3 months. As winter set in and the days got longer and darker, we were both itching for some Christmas cheer and it wasn’t long before we were stringing fairy lights and researching tree-sellers in our area. We leaned right in to the Christmas spirit making the flat a cosy, sparkly cave that was a welcome distraction through December.
We bought a tree from a seller in the local square, lugging the 8 foot monster all the way home only to realise it was higher than our ceilings. A little haircut from the top and we were good to go, decorating the tree with an assortment of glass ornaments I’d spent a couple of weeks sourcing around Malmö (it was at this point that we gave up on trying to only buy the minimum, and figured if we’re going to do Christmas, let’s do it properly).
Christmas Eve is the big day for celebrations in Sweden, so Joshua cooked dinner and we had a perfect evening at home. On Christmas morning we headed out for a walk, and had an unfortunate accident with Joshua breaking his hand, resulting in the next few days of the holiday being spent in the emergency room and at the hand specialist. Not the Christmas we’d anticipated, but it’s the one we got — and we’re setting a low, easily clearable bar for next Christmas, right?
