Signs of spring in Malmo

Stortorget_Malmo_spring.jpg

I feel like I spent most of March anticipating the arrival of spring, but I’ve since learned that spring in Sweden takes a lot longer to turn up than in other places. Most of the trees are still bare from the winter, but the air is feeling a little different and wildflowers have started to bloom along the canals. When you time it right with some sunshine and a clear skies, it feels like it will definitely be worth the wait when spring does eventually arrive ‘properly’.

Seeing these planter boxes in Stortorget (Malmö’s ‘Big Square’ in the old centre of town) made my heart skip a beat, the most beautiful blooms for everyone to admire as they walk through town. One thing I miss about living in Australia is that most houses on our street had a front yard that was full of flowers — so getting to wander the city and see these types of displays is my new version of flower-strolling around my neighbourhood (a pretty good substitute, if you ask me).
