Rainbow Spotting: NYC Saks Escalators

RainbowSpotting_Saks_2.jpg

The iridescent glass escalators that greet you on entry to the ground floor at Saks are worth making a trip just to see in person. The dichroic film that’s been applied to the glass shifts hues as you move through the store, or up and down the escalators. Opening into an atrium between the ground and first floors, it lets the changing rainbow be viewed from wherever you are in the store. Part of a massive redesign from Dutch architecture firm OMA the modern makeover is a delightful distraction from the money you’re likely to spend in-store… that’s what I told myself anyway, as I browsed the beauty counters and admired the fancy handbags!
